The Curriculum

Primary School

Almost without exception our pupils speak English as their second language. We believe that the rapid acquisition of English is of the greatest importance, so we place a heavy emphasis on teaching children correct English, beginning with their first days in the Foundation class, Foundation 1. Our TESL teacher works with all classes, and with small groups of girls who need extra support. In addition, our TESL teacher works with staff and pupils in all classes to further support the acquisition of English in our pupils.

In the Primary School we teach a modified version of the current English National curriculum which is of greater relevance to our pupils. Throughout the Primary school, Arabic and Islamic Studies form an important part of our curriculum. Girls have daily Arabic lessons, and Islamic Studies lessons twice a week.

Pupils are assessed on a regular basis to monitor progress towards meeting the standards required for entry into the senior school. Our Support for Learning Department works with pupils in small groups for numeracy, literacy and Arabic.

In the Foundation Stage we base our curriculum on the Foundation Stage Profile Activities and learning opportunities at this age are play-based, as we believe that it is through play that young children learn best.

Key Stage 1 Year 1 marks the transition to more formal education. The pupils have specialist lessons in music, P.E. and I.C.T.

In Key Stage 2 From Year 3, for the Core subjects of numeracy, literacy and Arabic, pupils are set in ability groups. This enables all girls to develop and progress according to their individual needs. The curriculum is modified to suit the needs of the cohort.

Science, art, history and geography are taught in class groups by the class teacher while specialist teachers provide Music, P.E. and ICT within their department facilities.

We provide a range of extra curricular activities within the school day to encourage social skills. Pupils are taught to respect one another and to always strive to do their best. Monitors are assigned from Years 3 – 6 to help with allocated tasks across the school, Prefects are assigned in Year 6 with the purpose of further developing skills of responsibility and in October 2009 we initiated a school council with pupil representatives from all ages who will meet regularly to initiate changes for the school community.

Senior School

Girls enter at age 11 both from Latifa's Primary Department and from other schools. The National Curriculum is followed throughout the Senior School, and additional choices are also made available. Latifa offers a broad range of GCSE subjects. Results are excellent when compared with those achieved by schools in the United Kingdom – over 57% of our students attain grades A or A* at GCSE level.

The Sixth Form curriculum, taught in a modern, purpose-built block, has two thrusts. For those girls intending to proceed to tertiary education in the United Kingdom or the United States, the following Advanced level and AS level subjects are offered: English Literature, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, French, Arabic, History, Geography and Art and Design. Results are excellent.

The second thrust in Latifa's Sixth Form is designed for students from local families who prefer to remain in the U.A.E. for tertiary studies. These girls normally take a smaller number of Advanced level subjects, as well as additional GCSEs. All pupils in the Sixth Form take Key Skills.

The School's careers programme begins in Year 9, when parents and students are actively engaged in discussions leading to the choice of GCSE options. In Year 11 girls are interviewed about their post-GCSE intentions, and in Year 12 the careers staff offer guidance on the choice of university. Early in Year 13 assistance is provided with the completion of university entrance forms and mock interviews are conducted. The careers programme benefits from a library of specialised literature, the use of software programmes and the internet. Outside speakers, including former students, are brought in to discuss their own career choices and experiences.
