| PE Department | ||||
Latifa School for Girls is committed to developing the whole child. Physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment is a unique and valuable contributor to a pupil’s physical development and well-being. We believe PE provides opportunities for the development of physical, personal, social and intellectual skills. It encourages positive thinking, positive actions, co-operation, tolerance and respect for others. PE promotes the undertaking of exercises that can be continued into adulthood as part of a healthy lifestyle. The activities we teach include: games, gymnastics and movement, swimming and water safety, athletics and outdoor adventure activities. The School also provides a range of extra curricular PE activities. Activities are offered to Key Stage Two pupils two afternoons a week. This allows the girls to practice some of the skills they have learnt during the year. The activities introduce a competitive element whilst fostering a sense of team spirit. Both Key Stages have a sports day each year and Key Stage Two has a swimming gala. The introduction of a Youth Sports Leaders Award in Year 6 has been piloted this year with great success. PE teachers assess children’s work in PE by making assessments as they observe their work during lessons. They record the progress made by children against the learning objectives for the lesson. All assessments are recorded in PE Shared Work. These records enable the PE teacher to make assessments for each child which can be used in their progress and annual reports. Children are awarded certificates as they progress through both the gymnastics and swimming awards schemes. Gymnastics awards have been adapted from the British Gymnastics Association Proficiency and Fun Fit award schemes. Swimming awards have been adapted from the Scottish Amateur Swimming Association award schemes. Overall, the PE scheme of work takes into account progression, continuity and differentiation. PE Co-ordinator is responsible for the planning, delivery, assessing and reporting of the curriculum. To view the job description for the PE Teacher please click here.
