OBSERVATION
The process of observation has three distinct stages:
Preparation
During the initial meeting, or at a later date before the observation, you and your mentor will meet to discuss:
  • the activity that will be observed and the aims of the activity
  • the focus of the observation
  • the time and place of the post observation discussion.

Observation
During the observation the task of the observer is to record what is taking place. Immediately after each observation there should be brief feedback and as soon as is practicable, ideally within two working days, a more detailed discussion should be arranged with your mentor.

Discussion
This should:
  • be based on an objective description of what has been seen
  • focus on description rather than judgements and the specific not the general
  • recognize and acknowledge positive points from the observation.

Information from these discussions will form part of the agenda for the review meeting.
