THE REVIEW MEETING AND TARGET SETTING
This meeting is a central part of the process. It is based on the equal professional partnership of mentor and mentee and draws together all the various strands of the mentoring process.
Its purpose is to review current performance in order to meet future training and other development needs and it is important that it provides an opportunity for genuine and open dialogue.
The meeting should be private and uninterrupted and should take place in comfortable surroundings. If necessary time will be made available for this meeting as there must be no pressure of time restrictions to limit the discussion.
Some items for an agenda for such a meeting might include:
- a summary of the self-appraisal
- a review of the outcomes following the observation
- a review of the data which may have been collected
- strengths and successes
- the identification of professional development needs
- aspirations for the future
- the completion of feedback sheets for the SMT/HODs and your own records (see Chapter 10)
- the framing of realistic short and long term targets and an action plan for achieving them.
|
Clear targets for action must be set. They should relate to the previously agreed areas of focus and they should be realistic in scope, number and timescale.
